Enerdeal, a leading renewable energy solutions provider that joined the EDP group in 2023, will be responsible for implementing two solar projects, comprising a 5 MWp rooftop installation and a 2 MWp carport system within The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company facilities in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg.
The solar arrays will be installed at Goodyear’s research & development and industrial complex, which is complemented by various plants and facilities in Colmar-Berg, Bissen and Dudelange.
The energy generated from these projects, totaling an estimated 6.500 MWh annually, will be consumed onsite at Goodyear. Overall, this initiative is projected to save approximately 3000 tons of CO2 emissions annually, underscoring both companies’ dedication to decarbonization and environmental stewardship.
Under the terms of the 20-year agreement, the solar distributed generation projects will be implemented in the “As-a-Service” model, where 100% of the investment is secured by EDP, and the financial benefits of this installation are shared between the companies.
In 2021, to help reduce its carbon footprint, Goodyear announced its global goal to move its manufacturing operations and processes to all renewable energy by 2040, with a mid-term goal of 100% renewable electricity in its manufacturing operations by 2030. Also, in 2021 Goodyear proactively made the decision to procure 100% renewable energy through credits in plants across Europe and Turkey. Today, Goodyear has onsite solar at 10 facilities across the globe, with a total capacity of 30 MW. This installation will be the fifth in EMEA and 11th globally.
“The solar as-a-service financing model allows our clients to rapidly and effortlessly deploy a massive renewable energy solution, fully in line with climate urgency and the growing strategic concern of most leading industries for Corporate Social Responsibility. We are proud of this project with Goodyear, paving the ways to a more sustainable future, says Francois Neu, Enerdeal’s Country Manager.”
Expected to be in operation by early 2025, these projects align seamlessly with Goodyear’s established sustainability goals. Romain Hansen, Vice President EMEA Product Development at Goodyear, says “These new projects mark an additional step forward in Goodyear’s transition to renewable energy in our facilities, and I’m proud to see the expansion of solar panel installations among our facilities in Luxembourg. In addition to our 2030 and 2040 goals, Goodyear has sustainability ambitions focused on product development and important sustainability projects related to product development, testing and energy efficiency.”
“Energy optimization was at the heart of discussions throughout the preparation of this project. That's why the integration into our existing electrical system was carefully planned to ensure a safe and efficient connection, as well as the specific location of the panels on the roof to optimize energy efficiency and maintenance”, said Johann Saxenhammer, Energies and Facilities Manager, Tire Plant Luxembourg.
